Sapphire is one of several long-form ambient works composed in 1998-9. The total duration is 72 minutes, and the work is best described as pure “musique d’ameublement.” Similar to the other long-from ambient recordings, Siren (Ambient) and Music for a Summer Evening, Sapphire adds to an important sub-genre within ambient music. Peaceful and serene - the music on this disc is comprised of piano sounds and is created using musical stochastics.

As Satie and Cage envisioned music of this type, this music is meant to be listened to at two distinct levels of awareness, as music (as foreground) and as sound (as background).

Though the work is technical in its construction and execution, the music on this disc provides a splendid backdrop to a long twilight. This is a perfect ambient music, compelling, evocative and strange in nuance yet able to blend perfectly into the sonic landscape. This recording can be listened to with rapt attention in headphones, for example, or in a variety of "ambient" settings.

This recording lends itself to a multichannel, and multi-room, playback environment. It is also suitable for use as an ambient sound installation in galleries, museums, offices, restaurants, living quarters, and other space.
